In Dad's Army season 5 episode 3, titled "Boots, Boots, Boots," Captain Mainwaring is determined to improve the physical fitness of his men. He believes that the key to winning the war is through being fit and healthy, and he decides that his unit needs to go on a 25-mile march to prove their stamina.
The platoon sets off on the march, each man carrying a full military pack, with Mainwaring leading the way. Almost immediately, Private Frazer begins to struggle with the heavy load, and Corporal Jones steps in to help him out.
As they continue on their way, the group encounters various obstacles, including a flooded road and a steep hill. But despite these challenges, the men persevere, with Mainwaring keeping a watchful eye on their progress.
However, as the march wears on, the men begin to tire, and Mainwaring notices that their boots are starting to wear out. He orders them to take a break and remove their footwear, but they soon discover that there are no spare boots available.
Mainwaring begins to panic, realizing that they will never be able to continue the march without proper footwear. But Sergeant Wilson comes up with a solution – he suggests they go to a nearby house and ask the residents if they have any spare boots they can borrow.
The group arrives at the house and is met by a comely young lady, who is immediately taken with the dashing Sergeant Wilson. She agrees to lend them boots, but demands that Wilson stay behind as collateral.
The group continues on their way, wearing the new boots, which are unfortunately a few sizes too large. They soon find that the boots are causing blisters and sores on their feet, and they stop to rest once again.
It is here that Mainwaring makes a decision that will change the course of the march. He orders the men to take off their boots and socks, and walk barefoot for the remainder of the distance. This idea is met with some trepidation, but they eventually agree to it.
As they trudge along, their feet becoming sore and blistered, the group begins to bond even more closely as they support each other through the discomfort. Even Mainwaring, who has been somewhat aloof throughout the march, begins to reveal his more human side, offering words of encouragement to his men.
Finally, they reach their destination, exhausted but triumphant. Mainwaring congratulates the men on their bravery, and they all agree that they are proud to have served under him.
"Boots, Boots, Boots" is an inspiring episode that highlights the determination and resilience of the men of Dad's Army. Despite the physical hardships they faced, they were able to pull together as a team and achieve their goal, proving that they were not just a group of bumbling amateurs, but true soldiers at heart.
