Kokonotsu is a young boy who dreams of becoming a manga artist, but his father wants him to take over their family's dagashi (cheap candy) shop. One day, a beautiful but eccentric girl named Hotaru Shidare comes to town and offers to be Kokonotsu's father's apprentice in the hopes of convincing him to work for her father's famous candy company.
In episode 2, titled "Kinoko Sticks and Namaiki Beer and...", Hotaru introduces Kokonotsu and his friends to two new dagashi: Kinoko Sticks and Namaiki Beer. Kinoko Sticks are mushroom-shaped candies that come in various flavors, while Namaiki Beer is a non-alcoholic fizzy drink that is supposed to taste like beer.
Hotaru insists that Kinoko Sticks are a high-quality dagashi that can only be found in select shops, including her father's candy company. She even goes as far as having Kokonotsu and his friends blind taste test Kinoko Sticks against a knock-off brand, with comical results. Similarly, Hotaru claims that Namaiki Beer is a unique dagashi that can only be found in Japan, and she eagerly encourages the group to try it out.
While enjoying the dagashi, Kokonotsu's friends notice that Hotaru is wearing a strange bracelet that emits a sweet smell. They soon find out that the bracelet is actually a piece of dagashi called Chainsaw Potato, and they are amazed by Hotaru's dedication and knowledge of the candy world.
Throughout the episode, Kokonotsu tries to convince Hotaru to stay in town and work at his father's dagashi shop, but Hotaru remains laser-focused on convincing Kokonotsu to take over her father's candy company.
"Kinoko Sticks and Namaiki Beer and..." delivers more of the quirky humor and candy-centric content that fans of Dagashi Kashi have come to expect. Hotaru continues to be a standout character with her unique personality and candy obsession, and it's clear that her interactions with Kokonotsu and his friends will continue to drive the show's plot.
