In the third episode of Dagashi Kashi, titled "Umai-bou vs Kinako-bou", the audience gets to see more of the two main characters, Shikada Kokonotsu and Hotaru Shidare. This episode is all about the debate between Umai-bou (delicious stick) and Kinako-bou (flour stick), two popular Japanese snacks that have very different flavors and textures.

Kokonotsu and Hotaru have vastly different opinions on which snack is better, with the former preferring Umai-bou's savory flavor and the latter preferring the sweet and nutty taste of Kinako-bou. Their disagreement leads them to hold a "snack-off" in which they both try to convince the other of the superior quality of their chosen snack.

As they try to sell each other on their snack of choice, the audience gets a glimpse into their personalities and what motivates them. Kokonotsu is driven by a desire to take over his father's candy shop business, even if it means sacrificing his own dreams of becoming a manga artist. Hotaru, on the other hand, is obsessed with dagashi (cheap, low-quality snacks) and is determined to convince Kokonotsu to take over the candy shop so that she can work there and continue exploring the world of dagashi.

Throughout the episode, the two engage in a variety of challenges to prove their point, including taste tests, blindfolded sniff tests, and an obstacle course. They each have their moments of triumph and moments of defeat, but in the end, it seems like they have both learned something from the experience.

One of the standout moments of the episode is a flashback to when Hotaru was a child, and her father tried to dissuade her from her love of dagashi by taking her to a fancy French dessert shop. Even though the desserts were beautiful and expensive, she found them boring and unappetizing, reaffirming her love of dagashi and the unique flavors and experiences they offer.

As the episode comes to a close, Kokonotsu and Hotaru are sitting outside the candy shop, with Kokonotsu musing on their shared passion for dagashi and realizing that they have a lot more in common than he initially thought. The episode ends with a cliffhanger, as a mysterious stranger arrives at the candy shop, signaling the start of a new adventure.
