"Dance Academy" is a serial drama about Australian teenage dancers. It is produced by Werner Film Productions in association with ZDF and the Australian Broadcast Company. The first part of the series aired in May 2010. In Series One, the story of the academy is narrated by new student Tara Webster. Throughout the first series, Tara and her fellow students at the National Academy of Dance, Katrina Karamakov, Ethan Karamakov, Samuel Lieberman, Abigail Armstrong and Christian Reed learn and practice various forms of dance. The series begins with Tara, a farm girl from the Australian Outback, arriving in Sydney for her audition to the Academy. The opening episode of Series One is titled: "Learn to Fly", as in the series' concluding episode. Part One ends with Tara having confidence issues after recovering from an injury she suffered mid-season. Series Two saw Tara trying to further develop her dance skills in the hopes of landing a part to represent her country in an international ballet production. Grace Whitney, Ben Tickle, and Saskia Duncan were added to the cast in this second installment. Tara struggles throughout her second year at the Academy, both personally and professionally, but in the concluding episode of the second season of "Dance Academy', she ultimately prevails, giving a stellar solo performance in the final show. Tara loses the competition to a fellow dancer that is going to leave the Academy and go professional. In Tara's voice-over in the final episode, she says it was never about winning for her but more for her love of dance. Series Three is about Tara as a third-year dance student, her last year at the National Academy of Dance. She and her fellow students are now in competition for much-sought after contract with the company. The first two seasons of "Dance Academy" have been released world-wide on dvd and the series has been nominated and won many broadcast awards. ABC has released five short novels based on the plot of "Dance Academy" as well.
