Doctor Who, Monsters: The Weeping Angels Season 1 Episode 1

Ep 1. Blink

  • June 9, 2007

In the first episode of season 3, titled "Blink," Doctor Who introduces viewers to one of its most terrifying villains: the Weeping Angels. The episode begins with Sally Sparrow, a young woman who stumbles upon a mysterious message left by the Doctor on an old, abandoned house. As she begins to investigate, she quickly discovers that there are strange forces at play, and that she is being pursued by a group of horrifying stone statues — the Weeping Angels.

The Weeping Angels are unlike any monsters the Doctor has faced before. They cannot move when they are being observed, but as soon as you look away, they are lightning fast and incredibly deadly. They feed off the life force of their victims, sending them back in time to live out the rest of their days in the past. To make matters worse, they are drawn to potential energy, which means that Sally and her friends are constantly in danger of attracting their attention.

As the episode unfolds, Sally and her friend Larry start to uncover the truth about the Weeping Angels. They learn the horrifying story of how they came to be, and the terrible fate that awaits anyone who encounters them. Faced with the prospect of being trapped in the past forever, they must work together to outsmart the Angels and find a way back to the present.

At its core, "Blink" is a story about the power of communication and the importance of living in the present. Through Sally's experiences, we see how easy it is to become trapped in our own past or future, and how difficult it can be to stay fully present in the moment. But at the same time, we see how Sally is able to connect with others, even in the face of danger, using the tools available to her — including the cryptic messages left by the Doctor.

As with most episodes of Doctor Who, there is plenty of humor and adventure to be had in "Blink," but what really sets it apart is the level of tension and fear that it creates. The Weeping Angels are genuinely terrifying, and the episode does an excellent job of building suspense and keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. At the same time, however, it also manages to be thought-provoking and emotionally resonant, making it one of the most memorable and impactful episodes of the series.
