The Doctor, still in his third incarnation, receives a message from his old friend Mike Yates requesting his assistance at a meditation center in rural England. Intrigued, the Doctor makes his way to the center, only to find that Yates and his friend Sarah Jane Smith are investigating strange happenings involving spiders. The center's leader, Lupton, has been using a mysterious crystal to gain psychic connection with a group of spiders from the planet Metebelis III, with disastrous consequences. As the Doctor and his companions investigate, they find themselves drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue involving human cults and alien conspiracies.
