Tom Mason and the remaining 2nd Mass have dealt with alien threats and adapted to life on the run, but they now face a new challenge in the form of hunger and starvation. With the food supply running low, the group must find sustainable sources of food or face the dire consequences of starvation, such as illness and desperation.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Tom and his team are willing to take risks in order to survive. They set out on a dangerous mission to a grocery store in search of supplies, but soon discover that they are not the only ones struggling to find food. A group of skitters, who have recently broken free from alien control, are also scavenging for food and supplies.
Tom and the skitters must put aside their differences and work together in order to survive, despite the mistrust and animosity that has grown between humans and skitters over the years. They must face a new threat in the form of a group of humans who have resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. These cannibals pose a real danger to the 2nd Mass, and Tom must find a way to protect his people from their savage attacks.
Meanwhile, Anne Glass and Dr. Kadar are working tirelessly to develop a sustainable food source for the group. They focus their efforts on cultivating crops and raising animals, but the results of their efforts are uncertain and the group must continue to scavenge for food in the meantime.
New alliances are formed, and old ones are tested as the group struggles to survive in this hostile world. They must overcome hunger and thirst, as well as the constant threat of attack from the aliens, if they hope to make it through to another day.
As the group battles hunger pains and desperation, they must also continue to confront the harsh reality of their situation. They are a small and vulnerable group, constantly on the run and fighting for survival against an overwhelming enemy. Will they be able to find a way to prevail in this never-ending conflict, or will hunger and desperation be their downfall?
