Guests arrive on the island with the hope of changing the course of their lives in Fantasy Island season 1 episode 5, titled "Twice in a Lifetime." The episode revolves around a middle-aged couple, Barbara and Oliver, who have been living separate lives for years due to their differences. While Barbara blames Oliver's career for their estranged relationship, Oliver thinks Barbara's selfishness has caused the distance between them.
The couple arrives at the island to rekindle their love and relive their youth. They are introduced to Roarke and his assistant, Ruby, who explain to them that they will be given a chance to live a second life on the island. The couple appears hesitant but eventually agrees to the opportunity.
The couple soon realizes that they have been transported back to 1985, the year they met. They are ecstatic to be young again and are thrilled to have another chance at love. However, their second chance at life is not as easy as it seems. They must navigate through their issues from the past and be honest with each other to move forward.
Barbara, who was an aspiring singer in her youth but gave up her dream to raise her kids, decides to pursue her passion once again. She takes the help of a local singer, Leo, who appears to take a liking towards her. Oliver, on the other hand, decides to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. He meets an enthusiastic publisher who believes in his work and offers to publish his novel.
As Barbara and Oliver pursue their individual interests, they begin to drift apart once again. Oliver feels his wife is neglecting him and is more focused on her singing career while Barbara accuses Oliver of being selfish and always putting his career first. They soon realize that their past issues were not entirely resolved and require a deeper understanding of each other to move forward.
Meanwhile, Ruby is surprised to find out that Roarke has a past connection with Barbara. As the episode progresses, Ruby becomes increasingly suspicious of Roarke's intentions for the couple and begins to investigate his past. She uncovers some shocking secrets which leave her conflicted about Roarke.
The island takes a dark turn when Barbara's life is in danger, and Oliver must fight to save her. As they work together to overcome the challenges, they realize that they truly love each other and that their relationship is worth fighting for. They make amends for their past mistakes and decide to leave the island with a renewed sense of hope and love for each other.
In the final scene, Ruby confronts Roarke about his past connection with Barbara, leaving the viewers with a cliffhanger that sets the stage for future episodes. The episode is a beautiful portrayal of second chances and the power of love and forgiveness.
