In season 2 episode 13 of Flea Market Flip, titled "Mother-Daughter Showdown," viewers are treated to a competition between three teams consisting of mother-daughter duos who are all out to find the best deals and transform them into profit. Hosted by Lara Spencer, each team is given $500 to shop at the Brimfield Antique Show in Massachusetts, where they'll need to find items that they can later fix, paint, and refurbish to sell at Brooklyn Flea. The teams only have one day to choose and purchase their items, so they need to be quick and decisive.
The first team, Babs and Lindsey, are from Madison, Connecticut and are both shop owners. They are experienced at seeking out unique items, but in this episode, they have different opinions on what they're looking for. Babs gravitates towards furniture while Lindsey leans more towards smaller items that can be easily transported. The pair bicker a bit, but eventually decide on an antique leather armchair, some vintage luggage, and a set of metal drawer pulls.
The second team consists of Cindy and Christy, a mother-daughter duo from Massachusetts. Cindy is a collector of antique kitchenware while Christy loves vintage clothing. Together, they decide to look for a mix of items that includes an antique butter churn, a vintage rolling pin, and a few pieces of old jewelry. However, they have trouble finding items at the flea market within their budget that fit their vision.
Finally, the third team is from New York City and is made up of Kate and her daughter Sarah. They are both crafters and are confident that they have a good eye for what will sell. Kate tends to be drawn to rusty metal pieces while Sarah loves anything bohemian. Together, they decide on a pair of metal headboards, a metal birdcage, and an old macrame hanging planter.
Once the teams have made their purchases, it's time to head back to Brooklyn Flea to start working on their renovations. They have just one day to fix up their items, which will be judged the next day by a panel of experts. Babs and Lindsey decide to paint their armchair and add a tufted back to give it a modern look. They also spray-paint their drawer pulls and clean up their vintage luggage. Cindy and Christy decide to focus on refinishing their antique butter churn and rolling pin, and using the jewelry they bought to create a set of earrings and a necklace. Kate and Sarah spray-paint their birdcage and create a moss-lined planter to put inside it. They also re-purpose their metal headboards as a trellis for small plants, and create a dreamcatcher using the macrame hanging planter.
The next day, the teams are judged based on their creativity, usability, and overall aesthetic. The judges are impressed with the modern look of Babs and Lindsey's armchair, and they appreciate the small touches like the decorative metal pulls on their vintage luggage. Cindy and Christy's antique butter churn is a hit with the judges, as well as their rolling pin. They are also impressed with the jewelry pieces, which they feel are unique and well-made. Finally, Kate and Sarah's birdcage and metal headboards both receive positive feedback, although the judges do say that the macrame planter is a bit too trendy for their taste.
In the end, only one team can come out on top, and the judges are tasked with choosing the winner. While all three teams did well in their renovations, the judges ultimately decide to award the mother-daughter duo of Cindy and Christy with the win. Their attention to detail and focus on small, functional items impressed the judges the most. However, all three teams were successful in their transformations, proving that anyone can turn a flea market find into a valuable item with a little bit of creativity and hard work.
