Frank of Ireland is a comedy series that follows the life of Frank (Brian Gleeson), a single man living in Dublin, who is stuck in a cycle of immature behavior and failed attempts to pursue his dreams of becoming a musician. The second episode of the show takes place after Frank's ex-girlfriend Áine (Sarah Greene) returns to Dublin after traveling the world, and he becomes obsessed with winning her back.
The episode opens with Frank waking up in his childhood bedroom, surrounded by his old toys and posters. When his mother (Pom Boyd) comes in to check on him, he reveals that he slept in his bed because he misses Áine and is feeling lonely. His mother is unsympathetic, reminding Frank that Áine left him because he was unable to commit to a serious relationship and had been cheating on her.
Desperate to win Áine back, Frank enlists the help of his best friend Doofus (Domhnall Gleeson) to plan a grand romantic gesture. Together, they hatch a plan to surprise Áine at her job as a florist, where Frank will perform a song he's written just for her. However, things quickly go awry when Frank realizes he's forgotten the lyrics to the song, forcing Doofus to awkwardly fill in with impromptu rhymes.
Meanwhile, Áine is dealing with her own problems, as she tries to impress an attractive new colleague (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) by coming up with an innovative floral design for a high-end client. She enlists the help of her boss Peter (Pat Shortt) to find the perfect flower for her design, but she soon discovers that Peter has a crush on her and is using the assignment as an excuse to spend time with her.
As the day goes on, Frank's attempts to win Áine back become more and more desperate, culminating in a cringe-worthy performance at a local pub where he drunkenly dedicates a song to her, much to her embarrassment. Meanwhile, Áine's work situation continues to spiral out of control as she realizes Peter's true intentions and becomes fed up with the superficiality of her job.
In the end, Frank's grand romantic gesture fails to win Áine back, and he is forced to confront the reality that he needs to change his behavior if he ever hopes to find true love. The episode ends on a hopeful note, as Frank and Áine share a moment of genuine connection and reflection, both realizing that they have a long way to go before they can truly be together.
Overall, episode two of Frank of Ireland is a hilarious and heartfelt exploration of love, commitment, and the ways in which we can sabotage our own happiness. With standout performances from Brian Gleeson and the rest of the talented cast, this episode is a must-watch for fans of irreverent comedy with a heart.
