The episode opens with a young girl named Hajime Ichinose, who is busy making small pieces of jewelry while working at a convenience store. She finds herself fascinated by a member of the Gatchaman team named Sugane Tachibana who she sees flying in the sky and wonders who they are and what they do.
Meanwhile, the Earth is under threat from an extraterrestrial force known as MESS. People are panicking, but the Gatchaman team is to the rescue. The team consists of five members, including Sugane Tachibana, who wears a suit and has the power to fly. The team is led by a woman named Paiman, who is a humanoid alien who guides the team.
Later, Sugane is sent on a mission to retrieve a special notebook given to a girl named Rui Ninomiya. The notebook is important because it contains an app that can help people realize their dreams, and Rui had created it. Sugane finds Rui, who is a tech genius, and gives her a warning about MESS. Rui listens to Sugane and decides to help the Gatchaman team in their fight against MESS.
Meanwhile, Hajime is trying to find out more about the Gatchaman team and asks around about them. She eventually finds out about their mission to protect Earth from MESS and decides to help them. She visits the Gatchaman headquarters where she meets Paiman, who is surprised to see her there. Paiman recognizes Hajime, who is revealed to be a former Gatchaman member.
The episode ends with the Gatchaman team in battle against MESS while Hajime, who has now joined the team, eagerly observes their fight. Overall, "Avant-garde" successfully sets up the show's premise and introduces its main characters. It also hints at the larger conflict that will drive the show forward.
