In season 2 of Going Deep With David Rees, the curious host tackles some of the simplest yet highly intriguing topics in his own unique and fun way. In episode 2, titled "How to Eavesdrop," David Rees takes on a task that might freak some people out, but will undoubtedly intrigue the curious few. Eavesdropping is one of those things that many people admit to doing, but few of them openly talk about it. But as David says, "we all eavesdrop" sometimes intentionally, and sometimes inadvertently. In this episode, he sets out to find out just how much we can learn if we pay attention to what others say when they think no one is listening.

The episode opens up with David citing some interesting statistics from a study conducted by a Harvard professor, which says that people spend 60% of their conversations talking about themselves, around 30% of their time trying to convince others of their opinions, and the remainder is spent building and managing relationships. David believes that with eavesdropping, we can learn a lot about people's behavior, but it's not an easy task. To teach us the essentials of eavesdropping, David invites a professional eavesdropper to the show.

The guest, Sandra, is a private investigator who has earned her living by eavesdropping on people. She explains her line of work and shares some tips on how to eavesdrop discreetly. Some of the tips she offers include maintaining distance, looking for ways to listen in without being detected, and keeping a poker face when listening. Sandra also explains how different environments impact the art of eavesdropping. In a noisy environment, Sandra says, it can be hard to eavesdrop on someone's conversation, but in a quiet setting, people tend to lower their voices, and that makes them easy to hear.

Next, David tries to put his newly-acquired eavesdropping skills to the test by trying to listen in on people's conversations in a crowded coffee shop. David is quickly taken aback by the amount of noise in the shop, but with Sandra's help, he's still able to pick up a conversation or two. Sandra also shares some helpful gadgets like parabolic microphones and listening devices that can be used for eavesdropping from a distance.

In another segment, David talks to another expert on eavesdropping, this time an audio forensic analyst who works with law enforcement agencies to help solve crimes using sound recordings. The analyst shares his experience and findings on how they use technology to enhance audio recordings to pick up conversations that may not be audible to the human ear.

Later, David meets with an electronic engineer, who designs and researches audio surveillance devices. The engineer explains how some devices work, shares different types of microphones used for eavesdropping, and the limits of audio recording technology. The engineer shows some of the devices used in espionage, including miniature microphones used to capture sound in inaccessible areas like under water or inside solid objects.

In the final segment, David explains that eavesdropping is not always about trying to pick up juicy gossip, but rather a tool to gain insight into human behavior. He talks to a psychologist who explains how eavesdropping can be used to learn about people's personalities, their emotions, their communication styles, and more. The psychologist also shares how this type of information can be used in the workplace to build stronger teams or to identify areas of conflict.

As the show comes to a close, David reflects on his experience of eavesdropping, and how he learned that we can gather a lot of information about people if we pay attention. But he also reminds us that eavesdropping should be done responsibly, especially in an age where privacy is more important than ever before. The episode serves as a reminder that, with the right tools, we can learn a lot from quietly listening in on someone's conversation.
