The episode "Up Smith Creek" is the ninth installment of the third season of Discovery Channel's reality series Gold Rush: South America. The episode follows the exploits of Todd Hoffman and his team as they continue their search for gold in South America.
The episode opens with the Hoffman crew still digging around the promising location known as Smith Creek. However, they've hit a bit of a wall, as heavy rains have caused their equipment to sink into the ground. This has put a halt to their operation, and Todd begins to worry that they might not get any more gold out of the area.
Determined to get back on track, Todd comes up with a plan to get their equipment out of the mud. He decides to use an excavator to lift the equipment out of the ground and onto a nearby hill. With the help of his crew, Todd successfully extracts the equipment, but it's clear that they've lost a lot of time and missed out on a lot of potential gold.
The Hoffman crew decides to move their operation to higher ground, and with a bit of luck, they manage to hit a promising vein of gold. They begin to extract the gold from the dirt, and shortly after, they find their first gold nugget. The excitement is palpable, and the crew is buoyed by their success.
Meanwhile, over at the Jungle Gold site, George Wright and Scott Lomu are continuing to expand their operation. They've brought in a new piece of equipment that they believe will help them process even more dirt than before. The new machine, known as a trommel, is designed to sift through dirt and extract gold. However, the machine is quite complex, and George and Scott struggle to get it up and running.
After a bit of trial and error, they manage to get the trommel working, and they're amazed at the amount of dirt that it's able to process. However, their success is short-lived, as the trommel breaks down after only a few hours of use. George and Scott realize that they need to find a more reliable machine if they're going to continue to expand their operation.
Back at Smith Creek, the Hoffman crew is continuing to dig for gold. They've hit a bit of a dry spell, and they haven't found any gold in a few days. Todd is beginning to worry that they might not be able to find any more gold at the site. However, after a bit of exploration, they manage to find a new vein of gold, and the crew is re-energized.
With their spirits lifted, the Hoffman crew continues to extract gold from the dirt. However, things take a turn for the worse when one of their machines breaks down. Todd realizes that they need to get the machine fixed as soon as possible if they're going to continue to mine for gold.
The episode ends with the Hoffman crew frantically trying to fix their broken machine. They know that time is of the essence, and they're determined to get it back up and running as soon as possible. As the sun sets over Smith Creek, the crew is left to ponder their future in South America and the possibility of finding even more gold.
