Watch Naked and Afraid
- 12 Seasons
Naked and Afraid is an exhilarating Discovery Channel reality television series that tests the limits of the human body and mind. The series follows the day-to-day lives of a man and woman who, upon first meeting each other, are dropped into the wilderness for three weeks. In accordance with the show's title, the couple spends the entirety of those three weeks naked and afraid. Each episode follows a new couple, who meet each other, unclothe themselves, and promptly take off on their journey into the wilderness. The two survivalists are given nothing but a satchel containing very limited supplies. Among them is the personal camera that they will use two document their exploits. In addition, each participant is allowed to bring one single personal item with them to help them out. Aside from the map they are given, the personal item they bring, and each other, participants have no help whatsoever. There is, of course, a camera crew present to film most of the episode, but they are not allowed to interact with the participants in any way. If one or more participant is unable to cope with the situation, however, they are given the option to quit the challenge and tap out. The television audience is updated occasionally throughout each episode about how much time has past, what day it is, and how much time the couple has left until they can be picked up by helicopter. Additional features of the series include periodic PSR, or Primitive Survival Rating, updates, which are scores based on the mental and physical fortitude exhibited by the couple throughout the 21 days. At the conclusion of each episode, after the couple's time in the wilderness has finally concluded and they are rescued by helicopter, before and after body-weight images and measurements are also shown to emphasize the effects of their time in the wild. Naked and Afraid is a daring attempt at reality television. It takes a tried and tested premise of dumping people in the wild with no outside help and adds a novel twist to the matter: having them be naked the entire time. As a survivalist-based reality television series, Naked and Afraid certainly accomplishes what it sets out to do.
