Harukana Receive is an anime that is centered around beach volleyball. In the first episode of season one titled "We Don't Need Aces," the main character, Haruka Oozora, moves to Okinawa to stay with her grandmother for the summer. Haruka is a tall girl who is passionate about volleyball and was actually part of her school team back in Tokyo.
On her first day staying with her grandmother, Haruka goes to the beach and sees two girls playing beach volleyball, Kanata and Narumi. Kanata is a short girl who is quite good at volleyball, while Narumi is tall and seems to not enjoy playing volleyball as much as Kanata.
Haruka is fascinated by their playing style and decides to watch them from afar. However, Kanata notices Haruka watching and asks her to help them practice. Haruka is hesitant at first but eventually agrees to help.
Kanata and Narumi explain the rules of beach volleyball to Haruka and they start playing. Haruka quickly realizes that Kanata is very good at receiving, which is the act of receiving the opponent's serve or attacks with one's arm to set the ball up for a spike or attack. However, Narumi struggles with this, which causes their team to lose points.
Haruka suggests that Narumi switch to being a spiker, the person who jumps and hits the ball over the net, and let Kanata focus on receiving. At first, Narumi is hesitant to switch roles, but Haruka convinces her and they start practicing.
As they practice, Haruka realizes that the beach volleyball game is different from indoor volleyball, as the sand makes movement more difficult, and the ball behaves differently. She also learns that communication is key to winning the game, as it helps teammates coordinate their moves.
The three of them continue to practice and improve their skills, but they also face some challenges, such as practicing under the scorching sun on the beach. Nevertheless, they persevere, and by the end of the episode, they are ready to enter a beach volleyball tournament.
Overall, the first episode of Harukana Receive is a lighthearted and fun introduction to the world of beach volleyball. The episode sets the stage for the rest of the season, as it establishes the characters and their relationships while also providing some useful information for the viewer to better understand the game.
