In season 4 episode 13 of the classic Western TV series Have Gun, Will Travel, entitled "The Legacy," the audience is introduced to a new plotline that sets Paladin (Richard Boone) on a new path.

The episode opens with Paladin meeting with a lawyer in San Francisco who had called upon him for his assistance. Upon arrival, the lawyer explained that his client, an old friend, had recently passed away and left a sizeable inheritance to Paladin in his will. However, to receive the inheritance, Paladin must first complete a task that his friend had set for him before his passing. The task involves retrieving a set of six playing cards, each signed by a prominent figure in the western world, and bringing them back to the law office within a month's time.

Paladin accepts the challenge and sets off on his journey to retrieve the cards. Along the way, he faces many challenges and meets an array of interesting characters. The first card he receives is from an old acquaintance, a gambler who Paladin once saved from certain death. The second card leads him to a wealthy rancher who doesn't take kindly to strangers on his property. Through a series of challenges, Paladin eventually earns the third card from a judge who had initially appeared to be impartial to his situation.

The next card proves to be the most difficult one to obtain. It is signed by a famous outlaw who has been hiding out in the hills for years. Paladin must navigate through dangerous territory and earn the respect of the outlaw to retrieve the card successfully. After much convincing, Paladin finally gains the card and the respect of the old criminal.

With four cards in hand, Paladin sets out to retrieve the final two. Along the way, he learns some important lessons about life and love. The fifth card leads Paladin to a widowed woman living in a small town. She refuses to give him the card and instead challenges him to a game of cards in exchange for it. Despite his protests, Paladin soon finds himself caught up in the game, and his heart. As their friendship develops, Paladin finds himself becoming more invested in her life and her fight against the powerful rancher who is trying to claim her land. In the end, Paladin earns the card and the woman's affection.

For the sixth and final card, Paladin must find a man called “the fox” who's long since retired from the world of guns and cards. The man he finds is an aging drunkard who no longer cares about the world or the cards he once valued so highly. Paladin, however, has a way of making people care and eventually, manages to convince the man to give him the final card.

After retrieving all the cards, Paladin heads back to the lawyer's office in San Francisco, ready to complete his mission and claim his inheritance. However, once he arrives, he discovers that the real reason for his friend's challenge was not monetary gain, but rather, to show him that there is more to life than just his job and his gun. It was a lesson that Paladin would not soon forget, and one that he would carry with him throughout the rest of the series.

Overall, season 4 episode 13 of Have Gun, Will Travel, titled "The Legacy," offers an engaging and thought-provoking story about friendship, love, and the true value of wealth. The episode also highlights the character of Paladin, who is not just a remarkable gunfighter but is also a significant philosopher at heart. Fans of the show will find much to enjoy in this episode, which features a strong performance from Richard Boone, and a great supporting cast guest starring characters who have left a sizable impression on the series.
