  • July 1, 2014

In the season 11 premiere of History Detectives, the team of investigators takes on the case of possible sabotage during the Civil War. The episode, titled "Special Investigations: Civil War Sabotage," delves into the possibility that Confederate spies were behind a massive fire that destroyed Union steamboats on the Mississippi River.

The team starts by examining an old map that shows the location of the steamboat fires. They then hit the archives to find any information related to the incidents. And as they analyze accounts, documents, and photographs from the war era, they soon realize that the fires were not isolated events. In fact, they happened in a pattern, indicating a deliberate attack.

The investigators then visit a shipyard in Pennsylvania to learn about the steamboats’ construction and to investigate how they might have been sabotaged. They also speak with a descendant of a Union captain who was present during one of the fires.

As their investigation progresses, the team discovers a link to a Confederate spy ring known as the "Hunters." They unravel the intriguing story of these Confederate agents who operated in the North and were responsible for a variety of covert missions, including sabotage, espionage, and assassination attempts.

The investigators also learn about the Hunters' leader, John Singleton Mosby, a legendary figure in Confederate history. Mosby, who commanded a group of elite cavalry known as "Mosby's Raiders," was notorious for his successful raids, unexpected attacks, and intelligence gathering.

As they dig deeper into the Hunters' activities, the detectives find evidence that suggests the group was involved in the Mississippi River fires. They examine a mysterious note that could be a code message, a rare artifact that may be connected to Mosby himself, and a set of letters that shed light on the Hunters' methods and motivations.

Throughout the episode, the team faces various challenges, including dead ends, conflicting accounts, and missing pieces of the puzzle. But with their expertise, persistence, and collaboration, they slowly piece together the story of the possible sabotage and the shadowy figures behind it.

In the end, the History Detectives present their findings and conclusions, leaving the viewers with a better understanding of the complexities and intrigue of the Civil War. Additionally, they shed light on the role of clandestine operations in the conflict and the impact they had on the outcome of the war.
