  • August 20, 2007

History Detectives is an American documentary television series that follows a team of experts on a quest to uncover the truth about historical mysteries and artifacts. In season 5 episode 7, titled "Red Cloud Letter; 32 Ford Roadster; Cast Iron Eagle," the History Detectives tackle three different historical mysteries in three distinct parts of the country.

The first mystery involves a letter sent by one of the most iconic Native American leaders, Red Cloud. The letter was found in a collection of papers belonging to a white settler who lived in the area where Red Cloud was based. The History Detectives set out to uncover the origins of the letter and its significance in the broader context of Red Cloud's life and legacy. To do so, they travel to Red Cloud's home on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where they meet with members of the Lakota tribe and explore the archives of the Red Cloud Heritage Center.

Next, the team travels to California to investigate the story of a 1932 Ford Roadster that allegedly belonged to the notorious gangster Al Capone. The car was found in a garage that had been sealed off for over 30 years, and it was covered in a layer of dust and debris. The History Detectives work with a team of automotive experts to determine whether the car is authentic and whether it has any connection to Capone's activities in California during the 1930s.

Finally, the team heads to the Midwest to investigate a cast iron eagle that was uncovered in a rural barn. The eagle is believed to have been part of a 19th-century flagpole, but its origins and significance are unclear. The History Detectives team uses advanced imaging technology and visits historical archives to try to piece together the story of this artifact and its place in American history.

Throughout the episode, the History Detectives use their expertise in history, archaeology, forensics, and other fields to unravel the mysteries of these artifacts and bring their stories to life. The show offers a fascinating look at the process of historical investigation and the many ways in which objects from the past can shed light on our understanding of the present.
