In season 7 episode 12 of How I Met Your Mother, titled Symphony of Illumination, the gang faces a holiday-themed episode that is far from typical. The episode opens with Robin getting a call from her doctor, who reveals she can never have kids - a revelation that greatly impacts her and sets the tone for the rest of the episode.
Robin tries to keep the news to herself and pretends that everything is fine, but her friends can see that something is off. They try to lift her spirits by taking her out to see a Christmas themed laser show. Meanwhile, Ted, Marshall, and Lily compete in a "Joyless Holiday" contest at GNB to see who can act the most aloof during the holiday season, with the winner receiving a steak dinner.
As the night goes on, Robin becomes more and more emotional and realizes that she needs to tell someone about her news. She decides to confide in Ted, who takes her to his apartment to talk. While there, Ted tells her about a time when he was heartbroken and needed someone to talk to, and how it helped him to feel better. Afterward, Robin thanks Ted for being there for her, and the two share a sweet moment.
Back at GNB, the competition heats up as Marshall and Lily begin to outdo each other with their holiday disinterest. Eventually, Marshall takes it too far and ends up ruining Christmas for everyone in the office. He realizes that his competitive nature got the best of him and apologizes to Lily, and the two make up.
The episode comes to a close with Robin looking out over New York City as the laser show plays in the background. She reflects on her current situation and realizes that although she may never be able to have kids, there are other ways to find happiness in life - including being surrounded by friends who care for her.
Overall, Symphony of Illumination is a poignant and heartfelt episode that deals with some heavy themes while still managing to balance the show's usual humor and charm. It showcases how the gang's friendship can provide comfort and support, even during the darkest times.
