Ted, Marshall, Lily, Barney, and Robin are all excited to attend the NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants. They all plan on tailgating before the game, and Barney is confident that they will be able to get access to the VIP tent, where all the celebrities and wealthy people will be. However, when they arrive at the tailgate, they find an unexpected surprise: a giant bus filled with rowdy, drunken Giants fans who have taken over the tailgate area.
Despite the chaos, the group eventually finds a spot to set up their own tailgate. However, their enjoyment is cut short when they run out of alcohol and food. Desperately searching for more supplies, they happen upon a parked car that is fully stocked with everything they could possibly need – but when they try to take advantage of the stranger's generosity, they quickly learn that the car belongs to someone else.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the stadium, Marshall and Lily are having their own adventure. As Lily is nearly eight months pregnant, she is desperate to find a bathroom. When they finally locate one, they discover that the line is impossibly long. Marshall comes up with a plan to get her in and out quickly – by pretending that she is in labor. However, their plan backfires when a real pregnant woman overhears them and enlists their help in getting her to the hospital.
Back at the tailgate, the group is still trying to come up with a way to enjoy the game without any supplies. Robin suggests that they focus on making new friends, so they start chatting up the other tailgaters around them. They meet a group of firefighters who are also Niners fans, and they quickly hit it off. However, when Marshall and Lily arrive back at the tailgate, they recognize one of the firefighters as Zoey's ex-husband, the Captain.
The group is hesitant to talk to the Captain, as they all have history with Zoey – and not all of it is positive. However, they eventually decide to approach him and try to make peace. Surprisingly, the Captain is also eager to bury the hatchet, and the group ends up having a great time watching the game with him and his firefighter buddies.
As the game comes to a close, the group realizes that they have all had an amazing time – even without all the VIP perks they had hoped for. They say goodbye to their new friends and head home, feeling grateful for each other's company and for the unexpected adventures of the day.
