In the fifth episode of I, Claudius season 1, titled "Some Justice," the calm and peace that was hung in the air of Rome comes to an end. Emperor Augustus' trusted advisor, Maecenas, is assassinated, creating uncertainty and unrest throughout the empire.

Meanwhile, Tiberius and Germanicus are dispatched to Germania to deal with the unruly local tribes who are rebelling against Roman occupation. Tiberius, true to his reputation, is cold and calculating, preferring to make an example of the defeated tribes rather than offering them peace. On the other hand, Germanicus is more empathetic and takes a gentler approach, trying to win the tribes over with kindness and diplomacy. The two generals' differing philosophies create tension and serve to highlight the constantly evolving battle tactics of the Roman Empire, pitting brute military force against the softer power of diplomatic negotiation.

Back in Rome, Livia continues her efforts to protect her son Tiberius's political future. Her machinations and conniving ways come to light when one of her schemes is exposed, and her reputation is called into question. This development shows how Livia's grip on her power and influence is beginning to slip, signaling the start of a decline that eventually leads to a shift in the balance of power in Rome.

The episode also focuses on the relationship between Claudius and Pallas, the former slave who has become one of the most powerful men in Rome. Pallas is a manipulative and unsavory character who has no qualms about using his position to further his own interests, even if it means hurting those around him. Claudius starts to realize this and decides to take a stand against him. At the same time, Claudius's talents as a writer are showcased when he attempts to transcribe the speeches given by the various generals. This subplot provides some light relief in an episode that is otherwise quite tense and dramatic.

Overall, "Some Justice" is a well-done episode that provides a glimpse into the complexities of Roman society, politics, and military strategy. The various subplots all serve to deepen our understanding of the characters involved and keep us engaged throughout. The tension between Tiberius and Germanicus, as well as between Livia and the other members of the royal family, keeps us on the edge of our seats. Meanwhile, Claudius's growing sense of agency and determination is a welcome development, and we are eager to see how he will continue to evolve throughout the rest of the series.
