Ep 9. Drafted

Lucy, Ricky, Fred, and Ethel are going to go out for a picnic. However, their plans are thwarted when they receive a telegram alerting them that the draft board wants to see Ricky right away. The draft board suspects that Ricky might have gone against the draft and thus they want to interview him before they take any action.

Ricky is the main breadwinner of the family and Lucy is worried that she will be left alone with no real means of support. The girls proceed to start a letter-writing campaign to plead Ricky's case. Lucy even goes as far as to tell the draft board that Ricky's parents were Cuban, thinking it might help him avoid the draft.

Meanwhile, Fred has also received a draft notice. He is not worried since he is too old and believes it is a mistake. However, he is still required to report for an examination. After the examination, he is declared medically unfit due to his teeth being in terrible shape.

Ricky has to report back to the draft board to receive his ruling. Lucy, Ethel, and Fred all accompany him and are instructed to stay in the hallway. However, Lucy decides to eavesdrop on what is happening inside the room by putting a glass on the door. She is caught by one of the officials and before she knows it, she is being questioned about her activities as well.

All four friends eventually leave the building, and while they are rejoicing about the results, they are left wondering what could have happened if Lucy hadn't interfered and almost ruined Ricky's chances.

Back at home, Ricky proposes a toast to their loved ones who are currently serving the country and they all sing a lovely rendition of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee." They then go ahead with their picnic plan in the backyard, and everything seems back to normal.

As usual, the show maintains its humor, even in the face of serious situations like the draft. This episode highlights the patriotism of the characters, captures the anxiety of the American public during the war years, and reminds us how humor can be an escape for people going through tough times.
