In the third episode of IRODUKU: The World in Colors, titled "No Rain, No Rainbow," the story continues to unfold as Hitomi deals with her newfound experience in the past and tries to fit in with her family and classmates. Hitomi tries to find meaning in her stay in the past, so she consults with her grandmother about the happiest moments of her young life, which revolved around color.
Hitomi feels overwhelmed by the effort she has to put in to acclimate herself to her new life in the past. She wants to attend school and make friends, but social interactions can be hard. While everyone around her has favorite colors that they're passionate about, aside from gray, Hitomi can't see colors. So she's left with questions and a predicament that seems insurmountable.
Trying to deal with her overflowing emotions and, at the same time, trying to find a passion of her own, Hitomi decides to try out for the school's photography club. Hitomi believes that she's got nothing left to lose, so it might be best to try to find something that will help her enjoy her stay in the past. Natsumi, having seen Hitomi is struggling, suggests the photography club as something that she might like.
However, Hitomi wasn't too keen on the idea since she was aware that with her achromatopsia (color blindness), she would be at a disadvantage. When the club leader, Kurumi, offers her a chance to participate, Hitomi feels grateful but also questions her ability as a photographer. But then Kurumi suggests that she takes black and white photographs, as there is often a deeper focus on light and shape in such photos that will help her photographs stand out.
Hitomi is grateful for the suggestion, and her newfound passion for photography takes her to a deserted beach. With no colors around her, Hitomi feels more comfortable in her thoughts and can contemplate the purpose of her stay in the past. The vast, empty beach seems soothing to her, and looking through the camera lens, she sees the world differently. She feels like she has discovered something unique and cherishes the world in black and white.
Hitomi spends hours taking photographs, and it makes her happy to know she can do something despite her achromatopsia. But, despite her progress with photography and her slowly growing friendship with her classmates who are taking care of her grandmother, another problem arises, and Hitomi fears she will have to leave the past early.
Iroh and Hitomi discover that they have to put some work into their relationship. Iroh's insecurities come to the fore as Hitomi begins to genuinely pursue her interests and talents. Iroh expresses disappointments that Hitomi is considering leaving to a place where she truly belongs out of fear. However, after a discussion with her grandmother, whose love and support run deep for Hitomi, she realizes the importance of connecting with the people around her, and begins to be more proactive in nurturing the growing friendship she has.
"No Rain, No Rainbow" is an episode rife with feelings of self-discovery, personal growth, and relational intricacies. Hitomi is weathering a tumultuous time, trying to discover her passion, and friendship while dealing with some heavy-hitting emotions. This episode works to move the story on further by drawing on the previous two episodes to lay a firm base for character development and connection.
