Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, is facing a new threat unlike anything he's ever encountered before. A new experimental serum known as Extremis has been developed which grants its users superhuman abilities, but also comes with deadly consequences. When a group of Extremis-enhanced terrorists attack a conference, killing dozens, Tony is forced to investigate the source of this new power and how to stop it. With the help of his assistant Pepper Potts and his friend Jim Rhodes, who will soon become the armored hero War Machine, Tony begins to unravel a conspiracy involving a shadowy organization known as the Mandarin and a scientist named Maya Hansen, who was involved in the creation of Extremis. As Tony delves deeper, he discovers unsettling connections between Hansen, the Mandarin, and his own past. Meanwhile, a dangerous figure from Tony's past, a brilliant hacker named Mallen, has also been given access to Extremis and is on a path of destruction.
