Guy Peron discovers the horrific details of Captain Merrick's death. Whilst he and the rest of the party travel to Ranpur for the independence celebrations, the train is beseiged and the Ahmed Kasim and other Muslims are killed. Peron returns to Mirat to break the news and tries unsuccessfully to meet Hari Kumar.
