Aoi arrives at Tenjin-ya to enjoy the final day of the festival. She meets some of the staff members and learns about the history of Tenjin-ya. However, she can sense something strange when she realizes there is a basement level that no one talks about. Aoi asks around and gets the feeling that the basement holds a secret unknown to the staff and visitors. She decides to investigate and sneaks away from the festivities.
Aoi embarks on a quest through the basement to find out what the secret is. As she explores, she ends up finding a completely different area which leads her to witness an incredible scene involving a young girl being held captive. She discovers that the girl is a shrine maiden who had been taken hostage by a spirit. Aoi’s attempts to rescue her bring the attention of the spirit who captures Aoi as well.
Aoi and the captive shrine maiden soon find themselves getting to know each other better. The shrine maiden explains that she had been kidnapped by the spirit in the hopes that it would force her to fulfill her duties. However, she didn’t want to be forced into it, so she had decided to wait for someone to save her. Aoi takes it upon herself to, not only save the girl but also, to investigate the spirit behind all of it.
As Aoi explores deeper into the spirit's lair, she discovers that the spirit is pining for the love of a human to free it from its cursed existence. The spirit, in question, had created an alternate world where it had been waiting for Aoi to help it escape its prison. Aoi's kind personality persuades the spirit to change its ways and release the shrine maiden.
Aoi manages to bring the shrine maiden back to Tenjin-ya unharmed. The young girl explains to all the staff members about the experience she had been through. Everyone is relieved that the shrine maiden is safe and sound. Aoi, herself, feels quite proud of what she has accomplished. She reveals to the others that even though she may have discovered the spirit’s secret, it was not so much a secret, as it was a cry for love.
A happy ending is had as the episode ends with Aoi being congratulated by everyone for her bravery and for saving the shrine maiden. Aoi’s quest through the basement of Tenjin-ya had uncovered a secret that was actually a plea for help. The spirit, once a feared and reviled creature, is now seen in a different light, a being who has lived for millennia, seeking the love of others. Aoi's discovery not only brought peace to the shrine maiden but to the spirit's tortured soul as well.
