Kath and Kim, an Australian sitcom, revolves around the lives of a mother and daughter duo, Kath and Kim, living in the fictional suburb of Fountain Lakes. The show explores the typical Australian suburban lifestyle, following the trials and tribulations of the characters, their families, and friends.
Season 2 episode 4, titled Obsession, begins with Kim worrying about getting older, and the possibility of losing her looks. Kath decides to help Kim out by booking them both in for a spa day. However, things take a turn when Kath and Kim meet up with Kath's former high school nemesis, Trude, at the spa.
Trude is everything that Kath and Kim are not - fit, attractive, and successful. She has just finished writing her second book, and even wears a designer fitness outfit to the spa. Kath and Kim are both immediately intimidated by Trude's presence.
As they sit in the spa area, Trude starts talking about her newfound obsession with running, and how it has changed her life. She claims that she has never felt better, and that running has become an addiction for her. Kath and Kim are both skeptical, but Trude insists that they join her for a run the following day.
The next day, Kath and Kim are hesitant to meet Trude for their run. However, they are surprised to find that Trude is not only a talented runner but also a supportive coach. She encourages Kath and Kim to push themselves and shows them some valuable techniques for improving their running.
As they continue to run with Trude, Kath and Kim's competitive sides begin to emerge. They both start to obsess over their performance and strive to be better than the other. This leads to a series of mishaps and accidents, including Kim running into a lamp post and Kath falling over into a hedge.
Despite their injuries, Kath and Kim refuse to give up. They become completely obsessed with running, constantly wearing their running gear and talking about their training sessions. Their friends and family members become increasingly concerned about their new obsession and try to intervene.
However, Kath and Kim are too far gone. They enter a local fun run, convinced that they will win. As the day of the race arrives, Kath and Kim are nervous, but determined to succeed. They start off strong, but as the race continues, they both begin to falter. Kath's running bra straps come undone, and Kim's wig starts to slip off.
Despite these setbacks, Kath and Kim push through to the finish line, where they are met by their friends and family members. Much to their surprise, Trude is also there and congratulates them on their performance. She reveals that the race was not about winning, but about taking part and enjoying the experience.
This episode of Kath and Kim explores the dangers of obsession, as Kath and Kim become completely consumed by their new-found passion for running. It is a hilarious and relatable portrayal of the lengths that people will go to achieve their goals, and the potential consequences of becoming too fixated on one thing.
