Hank and Peggy are busy at their work when they receive a newsletter from the Arlen Puppetry Association, which announces a puppet show for children. Bobby takes an interest in the event and forces his parents to let him attend the show. At the show, Bobby becomes fascinated by the puppets and decides to join the association.
Meanwhile, Dale discovers that his girlfriend Nancy is actually an expert in ventriloquism, and he decides to make use of her skills to help him with his pest extermination business. He creates a puppet that looks like a cockroach and asks Nancy to bring it to life while he traps the real pests. Nancy, however, wants to show off her skills, so she creates a puppet of her own and starts competing with Dale's puppet.
As the competition heats up, Bobby's involvement in the puppetry association causes a rift between him and Hank. Hank is not happy with his son's newfound interest and tries to distract him with other activities. However, Bobby is determined to pursue his passion and puts up a puppet show in the backyard. To his surprise, Hank is impressed with Bobby's performance and starts to understand the value of puppetry.
In the end, the competition between Dale and Nancy comes to a head when Dale's puppet malfunctions, causing him to lose his business. Nancy, on the other hand, gets an offer to become a professional ventriloquist and decides to pursue that path. Bobby continues to pursue his passion for puppetry, and Hank finds a new appreciation for his son's talents.
