- October 7, 2021
Komi Can't Communicate follows the story of Shouko Komi, a high school student known for her beauty and grace, but who harbors a secret: she suffers from extreme social anxiety that makes it nearly impossible for her to talk to others. Despite her struggles, Komi wants desperately to make friends and connect with her classmates, but her fear holds her back.
In Episode 1, we meet Komi on her first day of high school. As soon as she steps onto campus, she's struck by the sheer scale of the place: It's much bigger and more intimidating than she expected. She stands frozen in place for a moment, her heart pounding in her chest, before she takes an uncertain step forward.
Right away, we see Komi's struggle to communicate with others. She's surrounded by students chattering and laughing, but she can't seem to make a sound. Her inner monologue tells us that she wants to connect with these people, to make friends and be social, but her fear is holding her back.
In class, Komi's classmates take notice of her. They're struck by her beauty and poise, but also by her awkwardness and lack of social skills. One boy, Hitohito Tadano, seems especially interested in Komi. He's an average-looking guy with a kind heart, and he sees something special in Komi that no one else seems to notice.
As lunchtime approaches, Komi realizes that she's forgotten something important: she doesn't have a lunch. At first, she panics, thinking that she's doomed to go hungry. But Tadano steps in to help. He offers to share his lunch with her, and even though Komi can't bring herself to say anything out loud, the two of them share a quiet moment as they eat together.
Throughout the day, Komi encounters various other students, all of whom seem to be struggling with their own issues. There's a girl who's obsessed with romance, a boy who's overly serious, and even a popular girl who's desperate to be liked. Each of these characters adds a unique flavor to the show, and we get a sense that Komi's struggles are not unique.
At the end of the day, Komi is overwhelmed and exhausted. She's had a taste of what it's like to be around other people, but she's not sure if she can handle it on a daily basis. Tadano senses her distress and offers to walk her home. This small act of kindness means the world to Komi, and we see a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
Overall, Episode 1 of Komi Can't Communicate sets the stage for a heartwarming and lighthearted series about the struggles of adolescence. We're introduced to a range of quirky and relatable characters, and we begin to root for Komi as she navigates her way through high school. Even though Komi can't vocalize her thoughts and feelings, we get a real sense of who she is through her actions and expressions. And with Tadano by her side, we can't help but feel hopeful for her future.
