Ep 9. Father and Son

As a powerful earthquake shakes Los Angeles, a massive sinkhole opens up and swallows a family, who fall into a prehistoric world. In La Brea season 1 episode 9, titled Father and Son, we see the aftermath of the divide in the family when they reunite with one another.

Gavin, who has been separated from his family since they first fell into the abyss, has experienced a lot of interpersonal growth in his new environment. He has become a leader among the pack of survivors and has been fighting for their survival along with his new cohort Dr. Zeke. Tracey, his ex-wife, as always, has been the glue that pulls everyone together.

Gavin's newly acquired leadership has taken him to new heights, and he is convinced that they should explore a new area of the land that they have not yet seen. However, Dr. Zeke is wary of this and believes they should stay put in their current area. Gavin is so steadfast in his opinion that it has caused a rift between them.

Meanwhile, back home in the present day, Josh, the son of Tracey and Gavin, is having a hard time coming to terms with his father's absence. He has been bonding with his grandfather all along, but it becomes clear in this episode how painful his father's absence has been for him. We see Josh struggling to deal with his emotions, and his mother trying her best to help him cope.

As Gavin and his team venture deeper into the land, they come across some new creatures and discover changes that will change the course of their survival. However, they soon realize that they have stumbled upon something more significant than they had ever anticipated.

Father and Son is a powerful episode of La Brea that dives deep into the theme of family, its importance and the rifts that can form within it. It explores how the lack of communication and understanding amongst family members can cause rifts that widen over time. The episode sheds light on how such rifts can be overcome with empathy and communication.

Into its ninth episode, La Brea continues to keep its audiences engaged in the lives of these people as they navigate their way through a new world while their loved ones try to do the same in the present day. In an age where family dramas have become cliched and predictable, the show offers a fresh spin on this theme by setting it in an entirely different world.

The sets and production values continue to remain impressive, with the prehistoric world being a visual treat for the eyes. The characters are well-developed, and the actors have done a fantastic job in bringing them to life. Father and Son is the perfect episode to remind us that no matter where we are or what the situation, familial relationships remain the cornerstone of our lives.
