Detectives Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames investigate the murder of a wealthy businessman whose death may be related to his son's upcoming bar mitzvah. The victim, Howard Coyle, was an immigration lawyer who appeared to be involved in some shady business practices, including a possible affair and defrauding clients. As Goren and Eames delve deeper into the case, they discover a web of secrets and lies involving Coyle's family and colleagues.

The detectives soon learn that Coyle's son Josh is autistic and that Coyle had been struggling to find a place for him in the bar mitzvah ceremony. When Goren and Eames interview Josh's therapist, they discover that he had been receiving controversial treatment that involved deprivation of sensory stimulation. The therapist insists that the treatment is safe and necessary, but Goren is skeptical.

As the investigation continues, Goren and Eames uncover evidence that points to Coyle's partner, Frank Mackey, as the killer. However, when they confront Mackey, he denies any involvement and instead points the finger at Coyle's associate, who has her own reasons for wanting Coyle dead.

With the clock ticking and the bar mitzvah fast approaching, Goren and Eames race to solve the case before anyone else gets hurt. Along the way, they confront their own biases and misunderstandings about autism and the challenges faced by families of special needs children.

In the end, Goren and Eames unravel the truth behind Coyle's murder and come to a greater understanding of the complexities of family dynamics and the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones.
