In the second episode of the fifteenth season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, titled American Tragedy, the SVU squad investigates a high school party that resulted in the tragic death of a young girl. The party was held at the home of the wealthy and influential family, the Reynolds. The girl who passed away was the daughter of one of the Reynolds' employees.

Detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Nick Amaro (Danny Pino) receive the case after the victim's father reports her missing the morning after the party. The detectives soon discover that the party was a result of the Reynolds' daughter Madison's (Alyssa Preston) birthday, and that the victim was one of Madison's guests.

The investigation leads them to several witnesses, including the victim's brother, who reveals a culture of underage drinking and drug use at the party. They also speak to Madison's friend, a girl who admits that she saw the victim with Madison's older brother, Preston (Lou Taylor Pucci), before she went missing.

Preston, who is a known troublemaker and has a history of drug abuse, quickly becomes the prime suspect in the case. However, the Reynolds family uses their power and influence to protect him, and he denies any involvement in the victim's death.

Meanwhile, Captain Cragen (Dann Florek) and ADA Barba (Raúl Esparza) are dealing with their own issues. Barba is being questioned by the Bar Association for his actions in a previous case, while Cragen is dealing with personal problems that threaten to affect his ability to lead the squad.

As the case unfolds, the detectives face roadblocks at every turn. They encounter a family that is more concerned with protecting their own reputation than with seeking justice for the victim, leading Benson and Amaro to question whether they have the resources to bring the perpetrator to justice.

Throughout the episode, the show explores themes of privilege, power, and the corrupting influence of wealth and status. As always, the SVU squad is determined to get to the truth, no matter the cost.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 15 episode 2, American Tragedy, is a tense and emotionally charged episode that showcases the show's ability to tackle timely and relevant issues head-on.
