The episode opens up with the discovery of a body, the victim of an apparent homicide. The detectives of the Special Victims Unit are called onto the scene and the investigation commences. The victim, a young woman, was found in a remote area and was unidentifiable at first. However, through the use of advanced forensic techniques, the victim was identified as a freelance journalist named Lucy Carney.

As the detectives dig deeper into the case, they find that Lucy was working on a story about a controversial radio host named Eddie Bates. Bates runs a show called "Info Wars," where he espouses extreme views on a variety of topics, ranging from politics to health care to climate change. Lucy had been investigating Bates and his followers for months, trying to uncover any illegal activity that might be happening within the group.

The detectives soon discover that Bates and his followers have been under surveillance by the FBI for months. Although they cannot disclose the details of the investigation, they do reveal that they suspect that Bates and his followers are involved in a number of illegal activities, including fraud and money laundering. Lucy had stumbled upon something big, and it was likely that her investigative work had attracted the attention of Bates and his followers.

As the investigation deepens, the detectives start to uncover a complex web of lies and deceit surrounding Lucy's death. They discover that Bates and his followers had been posting numerous online threats against Lucy in the weeks leading up to her murder. These threats had been dismissed at the time as the work of internet trolls, but it soon becomes clear that they were much more serious than anyone had realized.

The detectives also discover that Lucy had been in contact with a whistle-blower from within Bates' organization. This individual had been sending her information about the group's activities, and it had been this information that had started Lucy on her investigative journey. The whistle-blower had remained anonymous, but the detectives manage to track them down and convince them to come forward with their evidence.

With all of this information, the detectives are able to piece together a timeline of the events leading up to Lucy's death. They discover that Bates and his followers had been planning to silence her for weeks, and had been monitoring her movements and activities in order to carry out the deed. The night that Lucy was killed, she had been attending a meeting with the whistle-blower, where they had planned to exchange information. Bates and his followers had been waiting for them, and had ambushed them before they could escape.

In the end, the detectives are able to arrest Bates and his followers on a variety of charges. They are also able to bring closure to Lucy's family, who had been devastated by her death. The investigation had revealed a dark side of the internet and the power of extreme beliefs, but the detectives had been able to bring those responsible to justice.
