In Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 9 episode 14, titled "Inconceivable," the team investigates a case of surrogacy that goes terribly wrong when a wealthy couple's surrogate mother is found dead in her apartment. The detectives initially suspect the husband of the couple, who had an affair with the surrogate, but as they delve deeper into the case, they discover a web of lies and betrayal that implicates several people in the woman's death.

Detectives Olivia Benson, Elliot Stabler, John Munch, and Odafin Tutuola are on the case, working closely with Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot. They quickly determine that the victim, Rachel Inman, was inseminated with the husband's sperm, but evidence shows that he was not the father of the child she was carrying. The team follows the trail of the real father, who is revealed to be a sperm donor named Jeff Lynwood. Jeff had donated his sperm to a fertility clinic and had no idea that his sperm had been used in this surrogacy.

As the investigation continues, the team discovers that Jeff had made contact with the surrogate, Rachel, and had been paying her additional money for regular updates about the pregnancy. Rachel had developed feelings for Jeff and had planned to use the baby to get him to leave his wealthy wife and be with her. When Jeff informed her that he intended to stay with his wife, Rachel became enraged and threatened to reveal his identity to the couple. Jeff realized that Rachel was unstable, and he became concerned for the safety of the baby.

Meanwhile, the detectives also uncover evidence that the surrogate agency had not properly screened Rachel before accepting her as a surrogate. They discover that Rachel had a history of mental illness and had been hospitalized several times for suicide attempts. Despite this, the agency had failed to inform the couple or Jeff of her mental health issues.

As the case unfolds, the team faces several obstacles, including Jeff's reluctance to testify and Rachel's wealthy and powerful parents, who hire a high-powered defense attorney to protect their daughter's reputation. However, Benson and her team are determined to get justice for Rachel and the innocent baby caught in the middle of this tragedy.

"Inconceivable" explores complex issues surrounding surrogacy, including the ethical concerns involved in using donor sperm and the challenges of properly screening surrogates. The episode also raises questions about the legal and moral responsibilities of surrogacy agencies and the potential risks involved in this increasingly popular method of family building. As always, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit delivers a gripping, thought-provoking episode that shines a light on important social issues.
