Life Below Zero is a captivating reality series that follows the day-to-day struggles of several people who choose to live off the grid in the wilds of Alaska. In season 5 episode 1, entitled "Ready or Not," viewers are introduced to a new set of challenges faced by the cast members.
The episode begins with a beautiful aerial shot of the remote arctic tundra as hunter and trapper Erik Salitan gets ready to fly his airplane to his new hunting grounds. Erik must travel to a mountain range over 200 miles away where he is hoping to track down and kill a black bear. His challenge is compounded by the fact that the mountainous terrain and unpredictable weather conditions make a successful hunt anything but guaranteed.
Meanwhile, neighboring homesteader Chip Hailstone and his family are trying to prepare for the onset of winter. Chip knows that the arctic climate can be brutally unforgiving and that the key to survival is to be ready for anything. He spends most of his waking hours building and repairing necessary structures on his property, like his dog house and winter tent. But the hard work pays off when the family is able to settle in for a warm and cozy campfire dinner in their newly constructed tent.
Not everyone in the episode is preparing for winter, though. Commercial fisherman Glenn Villeneuve is living a completely different lifestyle as he fishes the Kobuk River for fresh salmon and sturgeon. As Glenn navigates the narrow waterways in his small boat, he explains that fishing in Alaska is not just a way of life, but also a source of income. But even as he enjoys the fruits of his labor, Glenn never loses sight of the fact that the river can be both a provider and a destroyer, especially if the weather turns sour.
The episode also introduces viewers to Sue Aikens, who owns and operates the Kavik River Camp. Sue is a survivor in every sense of the word, having outlasted three ex-husbands and survived a grisly bear attack. Her remote outpost is a haven for weary travelers and hunters, but it is also a place where every decision is a matter of survival. As the camera follows Sue around camp, it becomes clear that she is a force to be reckoned with, commanding respect and admiration from her staff and guests alike.
Finally, we are introduced to primitive skills expert Cody Lundin, who lives entirely off the land. Cody explains that his approach to living off the grid is not just about survival, but also about thriving. He demonstrates his skills by constructing a traditional bear trap made from natural materials found in the wilderness. Cody's goal is to show others that by learning to live in harmony with nature, they can not only survive but also live fulfilling lives.
Overall, "Ready or Not" is a fantastic introduction to the newest season of Life Below Zero. The episode highlights the incredible diversity of lifestyles and challenges faced by the cast members, while also giving viewers a glimpse into the stunning natural beauty of Alaska. Whether you are a seasoned fan of the series or a newcomer looking for a thrilling glimpse into life on the edge of civilization, this episode is sure to leave you wanting more.
