In the "Clean Pens Grandma Guys" episode of Life in Pieces season 4, the family is forced to confront their cleaning habits when Tim and Heather hire a cleaning service for the first time. Tim and Heather struggle to relinquish control as the cleaning service goes about their job, and it becomes clear that they each have different priorities when it comes to keeping their house clean. Meanwhile, Greg and Jen have their own cleaning woes as they learn that their youngest daughter Lark has been eating crayons. They try various methods to clean out her system before her daycare's open house, but nothing seems to work.
In another part of the episode, Matt and Colleen are surprised to find that their cleaning lady has brought her son along to help out. The son, who is still in high school, is a bit of an oddball and quickly takes an interest in Matt's vintage pen collection. Matt is hesitant to let anyone touch his prized possessions, but Colleen convinces him to give the kid a chance. As it turns out, the kid is a natural at repairing and restoring old pens, and Matt sees a bit of himself in the boy.
Finally, Joan and John are appalled when they discover that their maid has been using the same sponge to clean all parts of the house, including the bathroom and the kitchen. They try to rectify the situation by giving their maid a lesson in basic cleaning techniques, but they quickly find out that she has her own unique way of doing things. In the end, Joan and John realize that they may not be able to change their maid's habits, but they can adjust their own expectations and perhaps learn to be a bit more forgiving.
Throughout the episode, the family members learn that cleaning is not just about maintaining a tidy house, but also about relinquishing control and learning to trust others. They discover that everyone has their own quirks and idiosyncrasies when it comes to cleaning, and that sometimes it's best to just let go and enjoy the chaos.
