During the Civil War, the telegraph was still a relatively new means of communication. But President Abraham Lincoln used it to its fullest potential. From the War Department's Telegraph Office, he received nearly instant updates on battles throughout the country and relayed orders to his generals. Lincoln's use of the telegraph helped Union forces triumph at Gettysburg, and set the stage for one of the most famous speeches in American history.
