Lockup Extended Stay: Santa Rosa Season 1 Episode 1 Blood Lines

  • April 7, 2012

Lockup Extended Stay: Santa Rosa is a series that takes an in-depth look at life behind bars in the Santa Rosa County Jail in Milton, Florida. In season 1 episode 1, titled "Blood Lines," viewers are introduced to some of the inmates housed in the jail's D-Block, which is reserved for the most violent offenders.

The episode opens with shots of the jail's exterior and aerial views of the surrounding area, accompanied by eerie music that sets the tone for what's to come. A title card introduces the series and the episode before cutting to the first of many interviews with inmates.

We meet a man named Mike, who was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Mike talks about the incident that led to his incarceration, but he seems more interested in reflecting on how he's changed since being locked up. He talks about how he's become more peaceful and less quick to anger, and we see footage of him outside in the jail yard, working out and interacting with other inmates.

The focus then shifts to a man named Dale, who was convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He's been in jail for six years and is counting down the days until his release. Dale is a different type of inmate than Mike -- he's full of energy and always cracking jokes, even with the guards. He talks about the struggles of being locked up and how he's learned to cope with the help of his fellow inmates.

We also meet a group of men who call themselves the "Bloods." They are members of a violent street gang who have formed a tight-knit brotherhood inside the jail. They talk about their history with the gang, their reasons for joining, and how they plan to keep the gang alive once they're released. We see them hanging out in their cell, smoking and joking around, but there's an undercurrent of tension as well. One member, a young man named Jamel, is particularly pensive and seems to be struggling with the prospect of spending more time in prison.

Throughout the episode, we see footage of the jail staff doing their rounds and interacting with the inmates. They are firm but fair, treating the inmates with respect while also making it clear that they are in control. We see them breaking up fights, administering medication, and escorting inmates to and from their cells.

The episode also delves into the issue of mental illness in the prison system. We meet a man named Greg who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He talks about how difficult it is to get his medications and how he's often overwhelmed by the chaos of life in jail. We see him pacing nervously in his cell, talking to himself and struggling to maintain his composure.

As the episode comes to a close, we're left with a sense of the harsh reality of life behind bars. The inmates are all dealing with their own personal struggles, but they've also formed a kind of camaraderie that helps them get through the long days. Lockup Extended Stay: Santa Rosa offers a glimpse into a world most of us will never experience, and "Blood Lines" sets the tone for what promises to be a compelling and eye-opening series.
