In the second episode of the second season of Love and Hate Crime, entitled "Trouble in Paradise," viewers are taken to the tropical paradise of Hawaii where they explore the murder of a young gay man named Jason Cortez. The episode investigates the case of a hate crime spent out of control and ultimately ended in the death of a young man who was loved by everyone he met.
Jason had a happy life in Hawaii; he had a good job, an amazing social life, and a loving family who supported him. Jason always felt accepted in Hawaii, and he never encountered hate against his sexuality. So it was a big shock for the LGBT+ community of Hawaii to learn that someone has killed Jason outside his home.
The investigation into Jason's murder reveals that the suspects in the case were two teenage boys, Jaren Ikaika Kepapa and his friend, and their motive was hate. They didn't know Jason personally, but Kepapa had developed an intense hatred toward homosexuality and started preaching about it on social media.
Police found Kepapa's social media messages where he posted hatred content against homosexual people, specifically calling out Jason and other gays in the community. Jaren Kepapa's violent homophobia and intense religious opinions had become well-known at the time of Jason's murder in 2012. In one of his posts on Facebook, Jaren wrote that he hates gays after he had walked out of the church. He further asked his Facebook followers, "Who wants to go to an anti-gay party at my house?''
Subsequently, the episode explores Jaren Kepapa's background and how he was raised in a religious household that instilled strict homophobic beliefs in him. The investigators also uncovered the boy's mental health condition, which was untreated, and which also may have influenced his behavior. The show also takes a close look at how religious beliefs have been used throughout history to denounce different kinds of people and justify discriminatory acts.
Throughout the episode, viewers will see how authorities worked to uncover the motive and ultimately prosecute those who committed this act of violence. They had to examine the case with intense scrutiny, especially with the crime scene lacking in evidence. The case put a lot of pressure on the investigators to not only catch the killer but to also provide a message to the community that hate crimes will not be tolerated.
In addition to the investigation, the episode also features interviews with Jason's family and friends, who speak of their devastation and how much they miss him. It highlights how Jason's death took a massive toll on his personal life and his six siblings' whose lives were forever impacted by the tragedy.
Overall, Love and Hate Crime: Trouble in Paradise showcases how hate crimes can happen anywhere, even in places with supposedly openminded communities. The episode is a warning that despicable acts of violence can transpire without warning and can leave a lot of people shattered. Therefore, it's crucial for communities and individuals to come together to prevent hate crimes and spread love and acceptance instead.
