In the thirteenth season of Love It or List It, we are introduced to episode 12, "One Last Renovation." In this episode, we follow a couple who has been living in their home for over two decades and are at odds about the future of their home. The husband, an avid gardener, believes that their home has all the necessary space and features to continue to meet their needs. However, the wife, who is an empty nester, is ready for a change and wants to downsize.
The couple faces a dilemma: should they renovate their current home or should they sell and invest in a new property? To help them make a decision, the duo calls upon experts Hilary Farr and David Visentin, who have gained immense fame over the years for counseling couples like these.
Hilary and her team take on the challenge of renovating the couple's home to make it more modern, functional, and spacious. She is tasked with addressing the wife's concerns of cramped and outdated spaces in the residence. At the same time, David Visentin and his team go on a hunt to find a new humble abode for the couple.
Throughout the episode, we see the duo coming up with multiple solutions while continuing to keep the little things that make the couple's house a home. Hilary transforms their living space by getting rid of old furniture and moving toward sleeker and more modern designs. Her plan includes renovating the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and even the laundry room. She also takes their small backyard and turns it into an oasis for her gardening husband, complete with a vegetable garden, fountains, and a labyrinth.
Meanwhile, David goes house hunting with the wife and tries to find a new property that meets her specifications, such as a smaller space with excellent outdoor amenities. However, David's plans are met with backlash when the husband realizes the potentials of their current home, and the sentimental values attached to it. He is concerned about starting a new life in a new home and abandoning something he has invested time and money in for a long time. The couple starts leaning more towards Hilary's renovation plan and are excited to see their home get a new and modern look while still keeping some of the original features.
As the episode comes to an end, Hilary and David make their final pitches on what the couple should do: sell or renovate. Both present their compelling arguments, highlighting the must-have features of each property. By the time the couple makes their decision, they are unanimous in wanting to stay put in their home of over two decades.
"One Last Renovation" packs a punch with stunning makeovers, expert advice on home improvements, and a human touch that will leave you rooting for the couple to make the right decision. It shows that sometimes all it takes is a little face-lift and a fresh perspective to regain the love in your long-term home.
