In season 19 episode 1 of Love It or List It titled Moms at Odds, homeowners Stacey and Alison are faced with a mounting dilemma. The couple, who share a one-story home with their young children and a dog, are divided over the future of their current residence.
Stacey, who has lived in the house for over a decade, loves the cozy nature of their abode, despite its various shortcomings. She adores the community, which is close-knit and provides numerous opportunities for socializing. The neighborhood is populated primarily by families, and Stacey believes that moving would disrupt the home-based environment that both she and her family cherish.
On the other hand, Alison looks at the house's faults and sees a need for significant upgrades. She primarily desires more space, particularly for hosting family and friends. Moreover, she thinks that modernizing the house would boost its overall value, making its investment purpose much more compelling.
Enter designer Hilary Farr and Realtor David Visentin, two colleagues with competing interests in their clients' decision. The two embark on separate plans of action, hoping to persuade the couple one way or another. Hilary sets out renovating the cramped house, renovating and redesigning spaces so that they fit the family's needs and desires. Meanwhile, David scours the real estate market, looking for a similarly cozy but much larger residence that satisfies Alison's criteria.
As the episode unfolds, viewers are treated to the ups and downs of both Hilary and David's challenges as Stacey and Alison scrutinize their options. Hilary has a tough time with the house's limited space and needs to get creative with designing solutions that function well, appear modern, and provide enough space. Additionally, Hilary must grapple with working around the couple's specific restrictions, which include a complete disregard for a sunroom, something the designer is firmly against.
David faces his own set of obstacles, both in finding a larger house and in swaying Alison's opinion. Most of the homes they visit are either too expensive or not suitable for the family's needs. Moreover, Alison is unwavering in her love for the current neighborhood, which significantly limits the realtor's ability to sell them on greener pastures elsewhere in the community.
Throughout the episode, tension between Stacey and Alison escalates as each struggles to compromise. Stacey, who is often seen as being more straightforward, admits to feeling out of her depth with baby-boomer design trends and modern designs that Hilary tries to incorporate. Alison feels equally frustrated with David's results and is unreceptive to ideas of shrinking down to a smaller home.
By the show's conclusion, both Hilary and David present their final results to the couple, hoping to sway them in their favor. The viewers are left wondering about the couple's final decision and how they will navigate the compromises and trade-offs that it entails.
