In the thirteenth episode of the second season of Love It or List It, the Sproat family is in need of a home makeover. Sabrina and Michael Sproat have been living in their two-story home for ten years, but the house has become cluttered and outdated. With three growing children, their current layout isn't functional for them, so they've turned to designer Hilary and realtor David to help them make a decision: will they love their home and stay, or will they list it and move on?
Hilary starts by assessing the Sproats' current living space and identifying their biggest grievances, which are their small and outdated kitchen and non-transformable open-concept living and dining room. Her goal is to transform the home's layout and maximize every inch of space. Her plan is to renovate the kitchen, enhance the dining area, move the laundry room, and create a functional family living room.
On the other side, David's objective is to find them a new house that caters to their growing family's needs. The Sproats are looking for a spacious, updated house with a big backyard for their three kids to play and room to host family gatherings. David begins his search with a three-bedroom family home that has a ton of outdoor space, an updated pool area, and a partially finished basement. While the house is older and needs some updates, it has a lot of potential.
As Hilary works on renovating the kitchen, she runs into some unexpected hiccups, which puts her in a time crunch. Meanwhile, David takes the Sproats to see two other homes that meet their search criteria, but neither feels like the perfect fit for their family.
Back at the Sproats' current home, Hilary is working hard to complete all her renovations before the big reveal. She transforms the living room into a comfortable and inviting space for the family to spend time together, while also incorporating Michael's want of a space for him and his buddies to watch sports. Meanwhile, David makes a last-minute effort to show the family another house, but it doesn't impress Sabrina, who feels she's become attached to their current home as they approach their 10th anniversary of living there.
Finally, it's time for Hilary and David to give their recommendations. Hilary unveils their newly renovated living space, which has exceeded the Sproats' expectations. The new kitchen is more functional and spacious, the living room is cozier and perfect for spending time together, and the dining area is more conducive to hosting family gatherings. Sabrina and Michael are happy with the changes, but there's still the decision to make about whether they'll choose to love or list their home.
David takes the Sproats to the home with the large backyard and pool, which, after seeing what Hilary has done with their current space, doesn't quite fit what they're seeking anymore. In a dramatic turn of events, the Sproats make their final decision to stay in their home and cherish the memories they've created over the last ten years and the new memories they'll create in their updated space.
Love It or List It season 2 episode 13 with the Sproat family shows just how important memories and attachments to a home can be when making the decision to stay or move. Hilary and David both have excellent options, but in the end, it's the Sproats who make their choice based on their emotional connections to their current home and the love and care that has been put into it.
