In Love It or List It season 9 episode 5, titled "Bachelor Pad," homeowners, Craig and Allison, are facing a conundrum. They love their beautiful home in the suburbs of Toronto, but it's just too big for them. The couple lives with their two dogs and a cat, but they don't even use half of their space. Allison is tired of cleaning four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and three living areas while her husband, Craig, who's a physician, works long hours.
Their home is also in need of some renovation. The couple invested in some major home improvements, such as a kitchen renovation, a backyard deck, and a bathroom remodel. However, their remaining rooms remain outdated, and the home feels cluttered with their belongings.
Craig and Allison have differing opinions on their next steps. Allison wants to pack up and move to a smaller home in the same neighborhood, so they can live a more manageable life. Craig, on the other hand, wants to keep the home and update the bedrooms and living spaces. He believes that the renovations will not only help them enjoy their home more, but it will also increase the property's value.
To help them make a decision, the couple reaches out to David and Hilary, the hosts of Love It or List It. David, who's a real estate agent, gives them a tour of three potential smaller homes, each with their own advantages. Hilary, who's an interior designer, checks out their current home and devises a plan to make it more functional and appealing.
The homeowners are torn between the options presented by David and Hilary. They love the smaller homes, but they would have to leave their beloved neighborhood, friends, and schools. They also worry about the uncertainties of moving during a pandemic. On the other hand, they are not sure if they can trust Hilary to deliver the home of their dreams within their budget, given their previous renovation experiences.
As the episode progresses, David shows them homes with modern amenities such as high ceilings, open-concept layouts, and outdoor spaces perfect for their pets. However, these homes, although smaller, don't quite have the same character, charm, or proximity to the community of their current home.
Meanwhile, Hilary tackles the issues with their current home. She takes down walls to create more open spaces that reflect the couple's contemporary style. She also upgrades their guest room into a stylish entertainment and work area for when Craig's colleagues come over, and their basement becomes a hip bar and lounge area for hosting friends and family for special occasions.
The tension between Craig and Allison mounts up as they visit the new homes and see their current home undergo renovation. They realize that they need to come to a consensus on what they want out of their home.
In the end, it's up to the couple to make the final decision - whether they love it or list it. Will the couple move to one of the chic, smaller homes that David showed them, or will they stay in their current home, which now has updated features from Hilary's renovation? Fans will have to tune in to find out.
