Malcolm in the Middle season 1 episode 12, Cheerleader, is a hilarious and chaotic episode that follows Malcolm's school as they prepare for cheerleading tryouts.
At the beginning of the episode, Lois is determined to prove to the school board that their cheerleading program is sexist. She wants to show that it is possible for boys to be cheerleaders and for girls to play football. She and Hal decide to help Malcolm impress the school with his cheerleading skills.
Meanwhile, Francis is up to his usual mischief at military school. He and his friends are planning a rebellion against the strict rules and procedures of the school. Reese, back at home, has been grounded and forced to do chores, but he attempts to trick Malcolm into switching places with him for a day.
As the cheerleading tryouts approach, Malcolm struggles to keep up with the female cheerleaders who have been practicing for months. Despite Lois and Hal's encouragement, Malcolm is convinced that the school will never accept him as a male cheerleader.
The tension rises as the tryouts begin and Malcolm is the only boy trying out. The other kids mock him and laugh at his attempts to keep up with the girls. Eventually, he gives up and walks off the stage in embarrassment.
However, the episode takes a surprising turn when Lois enlists a group of female football players to come to the tryouts and show the school board that girls can play football just as well as boys can cheerlead. The girls perform a spectacular halftime show, complete with a human pyramid and stunts that impress the crowd.
As a result, the school board approves the creation of a co-ed cheerleading squad and female football team. Malcolm is ecstatic that he can finally be a part of something he loves, and Reese is jealous that he missed out on all the action.
Overall, Cheerleader is a classic example of the humor and absurdity that Malcolm in the Middle is known for. The episode tackles serious topics, such as gender stereotypes and sexism, in a lighthearted and entertaining way. With standout performances from the cast and hilarious moments throughout, it is no wonder that this show has become a beloved cult classic.
