Adam Burns (Matt LeBlanc) is a suburban contractor who's on a mission to become a more involved and active parent to his three children. In season 1 episode 15, titled "Assisted Living," Adam and his wife Andi (Liza Snyder) are faced with the difficult decision of moving her elderly grandmother to an assisted living facility. The couple had promised Andi's grandmother they would never place her in a home, but her health has deteriorated to the point where she requires constant care and attention.
At first, Andi and Adam are determined to care for her at home. They hire a full-time caregiver to assist with her daily needs, but soon find themselves completely overwhelmed with the responsibility. Adam struggles to juggle his contracting business and the demands of raising three children, while also being responsible for his mother-in-law's care. Andi becomes increasingly frustrated with the situation, as her grandmother appears to be taking priority over their own family's needs. She struggles with guilt and sadness, feeling like she is betraying her grandmother's trust by placing her in a facility.
To complicate matters, Andi's siblings are not supportive of her decision to move their grandmother. Her brother is especially critical, arguing that it would be more cost-effective for the family to continue to care for her at home. Andi begins to question her own judgment, wondering if her grandmother truly needs to be in a facility or if she is simply trying to offload the responsibility onto someone else.
Meanwhile, Adam finds himself in the middle of a contracting crisis when his crew makes a costly mistake on a job. He scrambles to find a solution to the problem, but his attention is constantly pulled away by his family's needs. His mother-in-law recognizes Adam's struggle and offers him some advice, encouraging him to take care of himself and his family first and to trust that everything else will fall into place.
In the end, Andi and Adam come to a decision about Andi's grandmother's care. The episode explores themes of family, responsibility, and the challenges of caring for elderly loved ones. It also highlights the importance of open communication and honest discussion when faced with difficult decisions that affect the well-being of those we love.
