Dear Sigmund is the seventh episode of the fifth season of the hit television show M*A*S*H. The episode originally aired on November 12, 1976, and was directed by Charles S. Dubin.

The episode begins with Corporal Klinger (Jamie Farr) receiving a package from his Aunt Louise. It is a book titled "The Writings of Sigmund Freud". Klinger is dismayed, as he was expecting a package containing a wedding dress he had ordered for his girlfriend Laverne.

As Klinger reads through the book, he begins to develop an interest in psychology. He starts analyzing his fellow soldiers and begins to advise them on their problems. When Sergeant Zale (Johnny Haymer) complains about his recurring nightmares, Klinger suggests he try dream analysis.

Meanwhile, Captain Hawkeye Pierce (Alan Alda) is upset about a letter he received from his father. In the letter, his father criticizes him for his immaturity and tells him to grow up. Hawkeye is hurt by his father's words and begins to act out. He becomes more reckless in the OR and starts drinking heavily.

When Klinger hears about Hawkeye's troubles, he suggests that he write a letter to his father. Klinger tells Hawkeye that it may be therapeutic for him to express his feelings in writing. Hawkeye takes Klinger's advice and writes a letter to his father.

In the meantime, Colonel Potter (Harry Morgan) is concerned about the mental health of Private Baker (Darrell Zwerling). Baker has become obsessed with the idea that he is going to die soon. Potter brings in a psychiatrist, Major Hildebrand (Barry Corbin), to talk to Baker.

During their session, Hildebrand tells Baker that his fear of death is normal and that everyone feels it. He suggests that Baker try to find meaning in his life and focus on living, rather than dying. The session seems to help Baker, and he leaves feeling more optimistic about the future.

At the end of the episode, Hawkeye receives a response to his letter from his father. His father apologizes for his harsh words and tells Hawkeye that he is proud of him. Hawkeye is visibly moved by the letter and thanks Klinger for his help.

Overall, Dear Sigmund is a thought-provoking episode that explores the themes of mental health, family relationships, and the power of communication. Through the characters' struggles, the episode illustrates the importance of seeking help when needed and the healing power of honest communication.
