Masterpiece Season 15 Episode 8 Bleak House (2)

  • December 8, 1985

Bleak House (2) is the eighth episode of the fifteenth season of the popular British television drama Masterpiece. It is the second part of an adaptation of the novel Bleak House by Charles Dickens.

The episode picks up where the previous one left off, with Lady Dedlock (played by Gillian Anderson) discovering the identity of her long-lost lover. This discovery sets in motion a chain of events that will have far-reaching consequences for Lady Dedlock, her husband (played by Charles Dance), and their family.

Meanwhile, the case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce - the long-running legal dispute that has consumed the lives of so many characters in the story - continues to drag on. Richard (played by Patrick Kennedy) becomes increasingly obsessed with the case, to the point where it begins to take a toll on his health and his relationships with those around him.

At the same time, Esther (played by Anna Maxwell Martin) finds herself caught between two very different suitors: the kindly John Jarndyce (played by Denis Lawson) and the dashing Captain Hawdon (played by Nathaniel Parker). Her own feelings are complicated by the revelation that she is not, in fact, the daughter of her supposed father, but rather the illegitimate child of her mother and an unknown man.

As the episode progresses, tensions continue to mount. Secrets are revealed, relationships are strained, and some characters find themselves facing difficult choices. Throughout it all, the specter of the courtroom looms large, with one character remarking that "the law is a harpy who sucks the life out of men".

Despite the many challenges they face, however, the characters of Bleak House remain determined to find happiness and fulfillment in their lives. Whether they will succeed in doing so, however, remains to be seen.

Overall, Bleak House (2) is a gripping and complex episode of Masterpiece, packed with drama, suspense, and emotional depth. Fans of the show and of Charles Dickens' work are sure to find much to enjoy and appreciate here.
