Masterpiece Season 29 Episode 6 Shooting the Past (1)
- November 7, 1999
Shooting the Past (1) is the sixth episode of the 29th season of the Masterpiece series. The episode centers around the character Marilyn Truman (played by Academy Award-winning actress Lindsay Duncan), who works as a curator at a photography library called the Fenton & Sons. Marilyn has spent her entire career painstakingly categorizing and archiving the vast collection of photographs that the library holds, but now the library's future is in jeopardy.
The library's owner, Mrs. Fenton (played by Maggie Smith), has died, and her estranged children are fighting over her estate. The library is one of the assets that they are vying for, and the heirs are considering selling it to a property developer who wants to turn it into luxury apartments. Marilyn is horrified at the prospect of losing the library and the irreplaceable photographs that it contains, and she sets out to convince the heirs to let her try to raise the money to buy the library herself.
Complicating matters is the arrival of an American filmmaker named Christopher Anderson (played by Timothy Spall), who is looking for photographs of a specific house that he wants to feature in his new film. Marilyn is hesitant to let anyone touch the photographs, even someone as prestigious as Anderson, but she realizes that his interest in the library might be a chance to generate the publicity and funding that she needs to save it.
As Marilyn works with Anderson to track down the photographs he needs, she must also navigate the politics and power struggles of the Fenton family, who are all dealing with their own personal struggles and resentments. Along the way, Marilyn discovers surprising connections between the photographs, the Fenton family, and Anderson, and she begins to piece together a larger story that sheds new light on the library's history.
Shooting the Past (1) is a poignant and thought-provoking drama that explores the power of memory, the value of history, and the relationships that can be formed through shared experiences. With stellar performances from its talented cast and masterful storytelling, this episode is a must-watch for any fan of the Masterpiece series.
