  • October 6, 2002

In the second episode of Masterpiece's 32nd season, viewers are transported to early 20th-century England where they are introduced to the Forsyte family. Based on the novel by John Galsworthy, The Forsyte Saga is a sweeping family drama spanning three generations, chronicling the lives and loves of this upper-middle-class British family.

The episode opens with an introduction to Jolyon Forsyte, a widower who has recently remarried. He is eager to reunite with his estranged daughter June, who has been living in Paris and is returning to London with her fiancé, Philip Bosinney. Despite his excitement at seeing his daughter once more, Jolyon cannot help but worry about Bosinney and what the young architect's intentions might be.

Meanwhile, a parallel storyline is introduced following the relationship between sisters Irene and Winifred Dartie, the latter of whom is married to Jolyon's nephew Soames Forsyte. Irene is unhappily married to Winifred's brother, Young Jolyon, who left the family years prior and married a woman from a lower social class. Despite her unfulfilling marriage, Irene is a woman of principle and tries to keep her distance from the rest of the Forsyte family.

As the episode progresses, tensions rise between Jolyon and Soames as they both attempt to assert their dominance over the family and their various affairs. Philip Bosinney's intentions concerning June also become clearer, causing much concern for Jolyon and eventually leading to a confrontation between the two men.

Throughout the episode, the themes of class, love, and duty are explored in detail, as each character struggles to navigate the complexities of their own lives and relationships. The production values are exceptional, with stunning costumes and set design that bring the Edwardian-era setting to life. The acting is equally impressive, with standout performances from Damian Lewis as Soames, Ben Miles as Jolyon, and Gina McKee as Irene.

Overall, The Forsyte Saga, I (1) is a compelling introduction to what promises to be an engrossing family drama. With its rich characters and engaging storylines, it is sure to be a hit with fans of historical dramas and literary adaptations alike.
