Memphis Beat season 1 episode 3, titled "Love Her Tender," follows the detectives of the Memphis Police Department's Strategic Response Team as they investigate a string of burglaries in a wealthy neighborhood. As they work to track down the suspect, they also find themselves dealing with their own personal and romantic issues.
The episode begins with Lt. Rice (Alfre Woodard) sending her detectives out on a new case. The team is tasked with investigating a series of burglaries in the East Memphis neighborhood. They meet with the affected homeowners, who all seem to be well-off and in possession of valuable jewelry. Dwight (Jason Lee) notices that many of the stolen items are Elvis Presley possessions, which leads him to suspect that the burglar is an Elvis fanatic.
Meanwhile, Dwight is dealing with his own personal issues. His sister, Dinah (DJ Qualls), is in town and wants to reconnect with their estranged father. Dwight is hesitant to reach out to his dad, who left the family when they were young. However, Dinah convinces him to give it a try. They meet with their father, but the encounter does not go well. Dwight storms out, frustrated with his dad's lack of remorse for leaving them.
Back at the burglary investigation, Whitehead (Sam Hennings) and Sutton (Leonard Earl Howze) are interviewing a potential witness when they notice a strong odor coming from the man's home. They enter the house and discover a large marijuana grow operation. The owner is arrested, and the team realizes that the burglary suspect may also be connected to the drug operation.
As Dwight continues to investigate the burglaries, he runs into his ex-girlfriend, Charlie (Meghan Linsey). Charlie is a singer at a local bar and is struggling to make ends meet. Dwight offers to help her out, but she declines, not wanting to rely on him. Despite this, Dwight continues to try and reconnect with her throughout the episode.
The episode comes to a climax as the team receives a tip about the burglary suspect's whereabouts. They rush to the scene and engage in a shootout with the suspect, who is armed and dangerous. The team successfully apprehends him, but not before Whitehead is injured.
In the aftermath of the arrest, Dwight reaches out to Charlie again. This time, she accepts his help and agrees to perform at a benefit concert for Whitehead, who is still recovering from his injuries. The episode ends with the team coming together to celebrate their successful bust and Whitehead's recovery.
"Love Her Tender" explores the personal and romantic lives of the detectives while also showcasing their skills as law enforcement officers. The investigation into the burglaries and subsequent drug bust provide plenty of action and suspense, while the ongoing storyline of Dwight's relationship with his father and his connection to Charlie adds a layer of emotional depth to the episode. With an exciting conclusion and a heartwarming final scene, this episode of Memphis Beat is a must-watch for fans of crime dramas.
